Amaka Ozah Winslow M.S., CCC-SLP

Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU-Brook Road Campus
Amaka Ozah Winslow is a Speech-Language Pathologist who specializes in helping children learn to eat (in it’s simplest description!). For over 14 years, Amaka has worked with patients between the ages of birth-21 years with feeding difficulties of all kinds. Her main areas of interest within the field of pediatric dysphagia have been: identification and resolution of social and economic factors that disrupt feeding advancements in therapy; affects of medication on therapy progression; tube weaning protocols in conjunction with a strong nutrition plan; implementation of the IDDSI Classification into texture modification protocols; and improving home carryover using teletherapy/telemedicine as a modality of treatment. Amaka’s newest area of interest in Feeding Therapy is incorporating feeding therapy into orofacial myology practice in patients under 4 years of age.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Christopher Newport University and her Master’s of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from New York Medical College. Additional clinical experiences includes working at pediatric rehabilitation clinics, school-based settings, and skilled nursing facilities. Although she enjoys learning more about early language development, articulation-based therapy, and adult dysphagia—pediatric dysphagia and pediatric feeding disorders are by far her favorite areas of concentration in the field of Speech-Language Pathology!

Amaka is a certified Beckman Oral Motor Therapist and is currently working towards pursuing certification in Orofacial Myology. She has extensive clinical training in feeding therapy for patients with tracheostomies and coordinates this training for therapists within the Feeding and Outpatient Rehabilitation departments. Within the VCU Health System, she has pursued and achieved the specialty of being a Level 4 Clinician, the highest clinical distinction available within the Health System and demonstrates a true commitment to clinical excellency.

Amaka enjoys traveling (yes, even with my kiddos!), reading, running, cooking (and of course eating!) exotic dishes, Bible studies with friends, and spending quality time with friends and family. Her greatest honor in life is being a wife to her husband, Rob and a mother to her two beloved children, Etalam and Chere!
