Associate Professor Mas Suryalis Ahmad PhD (Melbourne), DClinDent Special Needs Dentistry (Melbourne), BDS (Malaya), SCTGR (Melbourne)

Assoc Prof Dr.Mas Suryalis Ahmad graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2006. After working under the Malaysian Ministry of Health for almost 4 years in Sarawak and Selangor, she joined the academia and later flew to Australia to undertake her specialist training in Special Care Dentistry. She underwent training in various hospitals and healthcare institutions in Victoria, Australia since January 2011 and then graduated with Doctor of Clinical Dentistry and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Melbourne in 2016. She has won many international awards for research, innovation and personal endeavours, particularly in the area of Special Care Dentistry, Gerodontology and Dental Education. Dr Mas is currently the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Director of the Special Care Dentistry postgraduate program, while serving as a Taskforce Member of the University’s Disability Services Unit. She teaches Special Care Dentistry in UiTM and many other universities across Malaysia and South East Asia. She also runs her specialist clinic at UiTM Dental Centre, Sungai Buloh, treating adults and old people with disability and medical conditions, including under sedation and general anaesthesia. Her particular interests are in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, Malaysian sign language communication in dental education and practice, comprehensive patient care for patients with special needs and disability advocacy.

At national level, Dr Mas acts as the Member of the Malaysian Dental Council’s Dental Specialist Board (Special Care Dentistry), Member of the Malaysian Qualification Agency’s Specialist Dental Education Committee (Special Needs Dentistry), Member of the College of Dental Specialists, Academy of Medicine Malaysia, and Associate Member of the Academy of Professor Malaysia. In addition, Dr Mas is the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Dental Journal and the Honorary Publication Secretary of the Malaysian Dental Association. Internationally, she has been appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Puthisastra Cambodia, Education Committee Member of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health, and Section Chairperson (Malaysia) of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. She is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry Internationale, as well as a Member of the Special Care Dentistry Association.
